Robert developed a technique for painting on glass in the 1830's and patented the process. He was a leading porcelain decorator for Sevres, but worked exclusively for Baccarat from 1843 until 1855, where he was responsible for decorating the more important pieces of the novel and wildly popular opaline glass. MARKS: IT IS SIGNED in Gold Script "Baccarat" plus some other letters that I can't make out, in the center of the large polished pontil on the base. There is NO artists signature on the painting. SIZE: 13-5/8" in diameter and 7-1/8" tall (34.6 x 18.1 cm).
It weighs almost 8 lbs or 3.61 kgs. CONDITION: Generally Very Good Antique Condition. The enamel painted decoration is Excellent.
The gold and black enamel on the protruding glass near the base are excellent. The gold paint at the rim is heavily worn. The gold script signature is also worn. The only real problem with the bowl is there are a number of flat chips and flakes on the edge of the foot rim.
These appear to have been painted over with a glossy black enamel paint. I have left it alone but I think it could be easily removed. Generally it's a pretty amazing piece of Baccarat. With just a little professional restoration this bowl would be fabulous! AS ALWAYS, I unconditionally guarantee that you will be satisfied.
