Antique Bohemian Opaline Glass Punch Bowl Set Possibly Josephinenhütte, 19th C
Offered here is a rare 19th century Bohemian opaline glass punch bowl set, consisting of a large lidded punch bowl in classic barrel form with four original matching cups. The set is made from exceptionally thick, heavy opaline glass in a soft pale blue tone, accented with hand-applied gilt banding around the bowl, lid, and cups. The weight, glass quality, and restrained decoration are characteristic of high-end Bohemian production from the mid-to-late 19th century. Based on the form, glass thickness, coloration, and style of gilding, this set is attributed to Bohemian manufacture and possibly by Josephinenhütte, one of the most respected and prolific luxury glassworks of the period. Comparable Josephinenhütte opaline pieces are known for their substantial construction, barrel-shaped forms, and elegant yet understated gilt decoration.
As is common with 19th-century Bohemian glass, this piece is unsigned, and attribution is based on stylistic and material comparison to documented examples. Notably, comparable punch bowls are often encountered without their original cups; examples retaining a full matching set of cups are significantly scarcer.
