Late 19th century GORHAM sterling & crystal punch bowl & matching pair of candlesticks retailed by the jeweler GROGAN Co, Pittsburgh. Grogan Company was the leading jeweler in Pittsburgh at the turn of the 20th century. The date code is EWL, Gorham used special 2 or 3 letter date codes for special customers (in this case Grogan Co).

Sterling base has repousse design of pomegranate festoons and cartouches. Glass is accentuated by intaglio cut satin design of pomegranate, grapes with tendrils, fruit swags cut by a copper wheel. I can not find a mark on the glass but Gorham worked with Hawkes and also Sinclair a lot.

Mellon bank was founded in Pittsburgh. Unfortunately we can not substantiate the story. SIZE OF PUNCH BOWL: 10" tall, 11.5" diameter. SIZE OF CANDLE STICKS: 13" tall, base is 5.25" diameter, top is 4 diameter.

PROVENANCE: Family lore has always claimed the punch bowl and candlesticks were donated by Mrs R. (Connie) Mellon for a fundraiser held in the mid 1940's by St Michaels of the Valley church in Ligonier, PA. I phoned the church and although they did not keep records of donations in the 1940's I was told Mrs R. Mellon is remembered by the church for being very generous in her donations to the church fundraisers. This set has been passed down in the family and the most recent stewards had ownership for 46 years...

She distinctly remembers because it was passed down to them when they bought their house. Richard King Mellon (June 19, 1899 June 3, 1970), commonly known as R. Financier, general, and philanthropist from the Pittsburgh. The son of Richard B. And grandson of Thomas Mellon.

He and his sister Sarah Mellon Scaife. Were heirs to the Mellon fortune, which included major holdings in Mellon Bank. Prepared its first list of the wealthiest Americans. It estimated that the four cousins were all amongst the richest eight people in the United States, with fortunes of between 400 and 700 million dollars each.

Mellon served as president and chairman of Mellon Bank. He also served on the board of trustees of the University of Pittsburgh. Over a of several decades and was a major benefactor to the university. He married Constance Prosser McCaulley, daughter of a New York. They adopted four children: Richard P. Mellon, Seward Prosser Mellon, Constance Barber Mellon, and Cassandra Mellon Milbury. Richard King Mellon was also the primary financial founder of Carnegie Mellon University's.
